C2629.MR25.K31 - IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATION PROJECTS
KPI NAME
Number of innovation projects implemented

INDICATOR CODE

RESPONSIBLE DIVISION

MR OUTPUT
2.5. Innovation and technology
PURPOSE
The purpose of this KPI is to measure the number of new and recurring innovation projects implemented by WFP, reflecting the practical application of innovative solutions to real-world challenges. It indicates the depth of innovation integration, organizational agility, and value creation, while supporting accountability for investments in innovation. Projects include those implemented for WFP and for external programmes contributing to SDG2. An innovation project is no longer considered as such when it either becomes a "corporate solution" and is therefore widely mainstreamed (no longer innovative) or after three years have elapsed (since last inclusion in corporate innovation portfolio or project support was received)
CALCULATION FORMULA
Result KPI = ∑ of active innovation projects supported during the reporting period
CALCULATION STEPS
Define the reference period:
Confirm the reporting period for which implemented innovation projects will be counted
Confirm the scope of eligible projects Include new and recurring WFP innovation projects and projects implemented for external programmes contributing to SDG2; exclude projects tracked separately and not part of CRF reporting
Retrieve project data Extract the list of innovation projects from the INN Accelerator system and any other relevant WFP innovation tracking platforms
Verify implementation status Identify which projects were actively implemented within the reference period, ensuring they meet eligibility criteria (i.e., still considered “innovation projects” and not yet transitioned to corporate solutions or beyond the three‑year limit)
Count qualifying projects Determine the total number of innovation projects implemented during the reference period.
Apply the formula
DATA SOURCE
Data is available from WFP Performance Reporting System of the INN Global Accelerator and Ventures
DATA COLLECTION METHOD
Data is collected and reviewed by Performance Reporting Officers from the Innovation projects reporting system

ASSUMPTIONS
Innovation project data recorded in WFP systems (e.g., INN Accelerator) is complete, up‑to‑date, and consistently categorized
Implementation status is accurately reported and reflects real operational progress during the reference period
Project classification criteria (innovation vs. corporate solution vs. retired after three years) are applied consistently across all units
External SDG2‑related innovation projects included in the KPI follow the same reporting standards as internal WFP projects
No major changes occur in the definition of “innovation project” that would affect comparability across reporting periods
Recurring or multi‑year projects are identifiable and correctly flagged to avoid duplication or miscounting
All relevant WFP units and partner programmes systematically report their innovation activities within the required timeframe
LIMITATIONS
Project reporting quality may vary across units, affecting consistency of counts
Definitions of “innovation project” may evolve over time, reducing comparability across years
Multiyear or recurring projects may be inconsistently classified, risking double counting or undercounting
Transition of projects to “corporate solutions” or their retirement after three years may not be uniformly tracked
External innovation projects contributing to SDG2 may follow different reporting standards than internal WFP projects.
The KPI captures quantity but not impact, strategic relevance, or effectiveness of innovation projects
Data completeness depends on timely updates to innovation tracking systems
